Desmond Sweeney creates original handpainted murals for commercial venues and private residential commissions.

The seascape and landscape murals call in the beauty of the natural environment, with soft faded tones and a dreamlike sense of nostalgia. These murals are painted and designed by Desmond Sweeney and on larger projects assisted by a team of skilled artists. Desmond’s creative and artisanal approach brings a relaxed ambience to any interior. The murals are painted directly onto existing surfaces or onto an artisanally applied distressed plaster finish.

Desmond has worked on bespoke projects for premiere architect firms; Akin Atelier, Techne, Acme & Co, Alexander & Co, TomMarkHenry, Studio Atelier and Abri Projects in collaboration with Interior Designers and Stylists Eleisha Gray, Studio Snoop, Samantha Leigh Interiors and Gabrielle Scott. The patrons of the arts supporting Desmond’s work by commissioning the murals include Merivale, Howard Smith Wharves, Harris Farm Markets, Sand Hill Road and FJM Property. The murals and art of Desmond Sweeney have featured in Vogue Living, The Design Files, Real Living, Habitus and Belle magazines.

THE ARTIST

Desmond Sweeney founded 8footwalls in 2013 drawing on a varied background of experiences which enhanced his expertise from related disciplines including mural painting, faux effects, traditional signpainting, airbrush and illustration. 

After almost a decade as a Signpainter operating a custom paint studio Desmond spent a season in the theatre in London which led to a contract with the Scenic Art Department at Opera Australia spending 5 years as a Scenic Artist painting sets, faux effects, backdrops and props. Desmond has additional 5 years experience teaching special effects props painting, portraiture and scenic painting at the National Institute of Dramatic Arts (NIDA) in Sydney Australia and recently spent 3 years teaching at the historic Fremantle Arts Centre in Western Australia. 

Desmond currently produces original oil and acrylic paintings from his studio in Fremantle and continues to create mural projects as 8footwalls internationally. The original artworks are available in the ‘Paintings’ section of this website. Please contact the artist to become a collector.
